In Plato's analogy, the sun represents the form of "the good". The sun gives off light, which illuminates the truth and knowledge that we are trying to see.
The human eye depends on an external source to be able to see. That external source is light. Without it, we would not be able to differentiate between colors and lines and shapes.
The human mind or soul depends on an external source to be able to understand. No one can look at something and immediately be able to fully understand it - they need a light to guide them toward the truth. The light from the form of "the good" allows them to differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad.
It's good to do philosophy because it's the closest we'll ever get to truly understanding forms. We'll never see them or be able to touch them, but by doing philosophy we can perceive them in a way that lights the path to our understanding.
Plato comes with an analogy about the sun the tree and the eye. He takes the concept of how we see and relates it back to why and how we wish to study philosophy.
The way he replaces the sun tree and eye are the sun is good the tree is knowledge and the eye is our soul. The sun or good illuminates the tree or the knowledge and the eye or the soul receives the illuminated knowledge and understands that. but it goes deeper than that.
In what i understand the reason that he chose the sun to be the good and the tree to be knowledge is there relationship. The tree needs sunlight to live and that is the relationship between good and knowledge. Without good knowledge has no meaning or purpose. That and the entire world is dependent on the sun or the good.
the reason we go through all this madness for philosophy is because we need and want to get as close to the truth and good as we possibly can.
Don't believe anything unless you see it for yourself. This is what it seems Plato is trying to show us. Seeing is useless if you have no light to see what you need to see. This makes seeing hard to do in the dark because there isn't light. To see something you need a light source, a eyesight and an object to see. Without one you can't finish the act of seeing. Back then the sun was a main light source. To see something you needed the sun. The sun is the center of this action. If light is clsoe to you so you can see but to far from the object you want to see, you still cant see what you want and If only the object is illuminated but your eyes are in darkness you still can't finish the act of sight. Thefore the sun is the most important part of this.
Once you ahve all, you can see the truth. You can never know if someone is lying from speech because it can be hidden but if you see something. them the form of seeing just lays down a fact in you, a new piece of knowledge in you.
plato uses the sun in place of the good, it gives light to the truth or what is. this allows the truth to be visible, or available. the eye cannot see without this ligh or good because it will only see black. the eye represents the soul needing sights from the outside. this is all a representation of the good being necessary in the pursue of knowledge.
Plato's sun analogy has three parts the sun, the object and the eye. The sun represents the good(form), the object represents the truth/knowledge, and the eye represents the soul. The good(sun) illuminates the truth(object),so that we can understand it in the soul(eye).
The sun analogy explains how knowlegde works because to receive knowledge it must first be illuminated by the form of good to be understood be the soul. This is how Plato uses the sun analogy to explain how knowledge works.
It is good to do philosophy because to do philosophy is as close as we could come to "the good." This is why it is good to do philosophy explained by Plato.
Plato uses the sun analogy to explain how knowledge and education truly work.
The eye is unable to see the true nature of objects without the presence of the sun.Similarly, the human mind is unable to understand the "forms" of objects without "the good."
Without the presence of the sun,it is impossible to truly know or understand an object. It serves as a link that allows objects to be seen for what they are.
Knowledge works in the same exact way. With knowledge one can know and fully comprehend something. Without it, one simply has beliefs and opinions.
Knowledge (the sun) is the greatest power and without it, the mind/soul, and forms cannot be discovered.
It is good to do philosophy because it is the best way that a person can attempt to shine light upon their lives and try to understand it.
Plato's Sun Analogy was created to explain the way to knowledge. In the Sun Analogy, The sun represents the form of the good. The eye sees objects, due to the light provided by the sun. In terms of how knowledge works, the eye is the soul and the good, or the sun, illuminates knowledge for the soul (the eye), in the quest to learn the truth/ knowlege or "what is". Plato reasons that it is "good" to do Philosophy because in Philosophy our souls search for the truth and things "that are". Since truth/knowledge is the instance of the good, practicing Philosophy is the closest we can get to the "good" itself. Philosophy gives us perspective and drives each of us to find "what is"- it is the ultimate education.
According to the Sun Analogy, there's a 3rd factor that's needed for sight. And that is the light. The sun illuminates the obeject so that our eyes can receive the image. Without light, everything will be dark, and we wouldn't be able to see anything. In philosophy, the sun is like "the good", the obeject is the truth/knowledge, and the eyes are our souls. In order to understand the truth, we need "the good".It helps us to distinguish between knowledge and ignorance. It's good to do philosophy because it is almost impossible to ever get to "the good". Just like our eyes will hurt if we look at the sun directly. But it's the closest we can get to reach it by looking at the truth and the knowledge. -Candy Lin.
Has anyone actually see the sun, of course we all can see it as a bright glare glowing sun but but to actually look directly in the sun especailly at sunrise which is not at its brightest. I am only one can see the sun that its emits various colours...yellow and purple and white that are like "dancing around" in and around the sun. I ve seen this every morning and its happens at sunset too. When i ask my friends to look at it they all say its too bright to be seen. So am i the only one to see this. My vision is still perfect.
